Akamas:  The Easternmost Natural Area Of Europe

The Akamas issue is the story of a national park that hasn't happened. Indecisive governments and greedy entrepreneurs who manipulated the local population have succeeded so far in preventing the permanent statutory protection of the area.

A series of interventions and faits accompli have nibbled away at this unique area.  In the mid-90s, the Cyprus Government decided to allow a hotel complex within the core area and development in the buffer zone. This has been strongly resisted by NGOs, and although the hotel is now there, we have at least succeeded in preventing other in-roads by bringing the issue to European attention.  However, the type and extent of protection are still pending, so weremain vigilant.

In the following pages we invite you to read the details, visit the location itself and consider our future scenarios.  If after visiting you feel that something should be done, then join your voice to ours.  Here is how:

  1. Lobby your local MEP to raise questions in the European Parliament.
