Μερικές από τις δραστηριότητες του Ιδρύματος μας κατά το τελευταίο δίμηνο

  • Επανέκδοση με αναθεωρημένα στοιχειά της μελέτης μας για τους γενετικά τροποποιημένους οργανισμούς. Στάληκε σε όλα τα μέλη της νέας Κυβέρνησης, σε όλους τους βουλευτές και σε ακαδημαϊκούς. Ευχαριστούμε το Συνεργατικό Ταμιευτήριο Λεμεσού για την στήριξή του. Έγιναν επαφές στην Ελλάδα για το ίδιο θέμα και αλληλοενημέρωση με τις αρμόδιες λειτουργούς της Υπηρεσίας Περιβάλλοντος κες Κωνσταντίνου και Στυλιανοπούλου.
  • Αποδοχή πρόσκλησης να γίνει το Ίδρυμα μέλος του Ευρωπαϊκού Οργανισμού των Πολιτών για τα Πρότυπα ECOS (European Environmental Citizens Organization for Standardization).
  • Αξιολόγηση των διλημμάτων και συμμετοχή σε συσκέψεις της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Περιβάλλοντος για την ανανέωση άδειας λατόμευσης στο 'Πολιτικό', λατομείο εντός περιοχής Natura 2000.
  • Συμμετοχή στη σύσκεψη του Δ.Σ της Ευρωπαϊκής Οργάνωσης Eurosite, στο οποίο παρακάθεται η Αρτεμις Γιορδαμλή.
  • Συμμετοχή στο συνέδριο της WWF Ελλάδος για τις κλιματικές αλλαγές με έμφαση στη προστασία των δασών. Στο περιθώριο έγινε και αλληλοενημέρωση για την εφαρμογή του Δικτύου Φύση 2000.
  • Ακρόαση με το νέο Υπουργό Εσωτερικών, κ. Νεοκλή Συλικιώτη, εφόλης της ύλης.
  • Εξέταση των προτάσεων αναβάθμισης του παραλιακού δρόμου Ladies Mile στη Λεμεσό και προετοιμασία σχολίων και εισηγήσεων.
  • Φιλοξενία για δεύτερη χρονιά στο Κέντρο Περιβαλλοντικών Μελετών, που λειτουργούμε στην Κρήτου Τέρρα, της Σχολής Γεωγραφίας του Πανεπιστημίου Reading, Αγγλίας.
  • Καθόλη τη διάρκεια του ακαδημαϊκού χρόνου το Κέντρο Περιβαλλοντικών Μελετών στην Κρήτου Τέρρα πρόσφερε περιβαλλοντική εκπαίδευση σε 2456 μαθητές δημοτικών σχολείων που ήρθαν στο Κέντρο με τους δασκάλους τους, σε 230 μαθητές ιδιωτικών σχολείων και σε 502 μαθητές/φοιτητές από το εξωτερικό.

Κατά το τελευταίο δίμηνο το αδελφό «Ίδρυμα Λαόνα για την Αναβίωση και Προστασία της Κυπριακής Υπαίθρου» συνεχίζει ν' ασχολείται ενεργά με τα εξής δύο θέματα:

  • Την υλοποίηση της Ευρωπαϊκής Σύμβασης για το Τοπίο που αποτελεί υποχρέωση της Χώρας μας, αλλά και απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση για την αναθεώρηση των οικιστικών και άλλων ζωνών που προγραμματίζει το κράτος το 2009.
  • Διεξαγωγή μελέτης για την αειφόρα αποκατάσταση μεταλλείων και λατομείων, σε όλη την Κύπρο.

 

Some of our Foundation's activities undertaken over the last two months

  • Re-printing with revised data our study for genetically modified organisms. It was sent to all members of the new Government, to all members of Parliament and to academicians. We thank the Cooperative Bank of Limassol for their support. Contacts were made with Greece on the same subject and with the officers of the Environment Service who deal with the issue of GMOs.
  • Acceptance of invitation to become a member of the European Environmental Citizens Organization for Standardization (ECOS).
  • Evaluation of the issues and participation in meetings of the Parliamentary Committee for the Environment regarding the renewal of a quarrying license at 'Politico', a quarry within Natura 2000 boundaries.
  • Participation in the council meeting of the European organisation, Eurosite.
  • Participation in the conference of WWF Greece on the Climatic Change focusing on the protection of forests. In the margin of the conference, there was also a briefing on the Natura 2000 Network.
  • Meeting with the new Minister of Interior, Mr. Neoklis Sylikiotis, regarding all matters of interest of our work.
  • Examination of proposals for upgrading the coastal road known as Ladies Mile, falling within the Sovereign Bases and preparation of comments and suggestions.
  • The University of Reading (Department of Geography) has completed its second study visit at the Cyprus Environmental Studies Centre, operated by Cyprus Foundation in the village of Kritou Terra, Paphos.
  • Over the academic year the Cyprus Environmental Studies Centre has offered environmental courses to 2456 pupils from state elementary schools, to 230 pupils from private schools and to 502 pupils/students from overseas schools.

During the last two months our sibling organisation the "Laona Foundation for the Conservation and Regeneration of the Cypriot Countryside" has continued to work on the following two subjects:

  • Implementation of the European Landscape Convention which Cyprus has enacted into law, but also an essential requirement for the revision of the island - wide development zones schedule for 2009.
  • Implementing a study for the sustainable restoration of mines and quarries, throughout Cyprus.
